Most common volleyball injuries and solutions

Volleyball is a popular sport all over the world. It is a kind of game that requires frequent running, jumping, and diving. That's why there are chances of being injured easily. But if you spend enough time in the practice sessions and are well aware of different types of injuries and how they occur, then the chances of getting injured decreases.

 But still, some common injuries in volleyball seems to occur frequently. Many newcomers in this field are not aware of these injuries and don't know what the solutions to these injuries are. So in this article, I'm going to discuss the most common injuries in volleyball and also about the answer.

1. Ankle sprains

Ankle sprains are the most common injuries for volleyball players. During rough and tough plays the players are always in the risk of ankle sprains. Mostly when they are landing and somehow their ankles rolls or twist a bit they have the chances of being getting injured.

Often because of bad passes or playing without thinking about the consequence of tough play causes ankle sprains. Every ankle sprain needs an 8-week course of daily rehabilitation exercise to remove the pain and decrease the chances of getting re-injured. The player can return on the field when he has no pain and can stand on his toes comfortably by supporting his body. Correct ankel brace and rest sometimes prevent ankel injuries.

2. Shoulder injuries

Hitting and serving the ball with sign of fatigue can cost you several shoulder injuries or pains. Extra movements of your arms during serving, hitting, blocking creates the chances of shoulder injuries. When you will feel a bit pain the rotator cuff muscle functionality will reduce soon.

That will create problems for you because you will not be able to serve or hit the ball properly then. To save your shoulders from getting injured you must do some stretching exercises regularly. If you still get yourself injured, then take enough rest and physical therapy.

3. Finger injuries

 Your fingers have to face some tough situations in volleyball like blocking, setting, and digging. These situations create chances of finger injuries. Common finger injuries include fractures, dislocations, tearing of a tendon, and ligament.

You will feel immense pain inside your finger in case your finger has dislocated or fractured. But the injury is regarded serious when you can't move or bend your fingers perfectly. Your injury can be solved by rest, some ice, or taping around the paining area. But severe injuries will need x – rays and consultation from the doctor.

4. Patellar tendonitis

It is a kind of inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin bone. Due to repetitive activities like jumping and landing most of the players face this type of injuries. If the landing is imperfect he can cause this injury just like ankle sprains.

To unload the pressure from the injured area you can use straps instantly. Ice, proper rest and compression can go well as the treatment of such type injuries. But to decrease the chances of such frequent injuries you should do stretching and leg strengthening exercises.

5. Rotator cuff tendonitis 

Rotator muscles are very important as they supply the power or energy to do better during serving and hitting the ball. But overuse of this muscle can cause you severe injuries during the play. Again, during powerful serve or hitting if you lose the balance of your body or specifically your shoulders, that can be very painful, and this will be a reason for being injured.

You should keep your arms in a good position while hitting or serving the ball and also don't think of overusing the power. But if you still get injured then take enough rest and therapy to resolve the pain as soon as possible.

6. Low back pain

Typically, lower back pains occur when players are going back for hitting or serving and moving forward after hitting or serving. Doing it frequently puts pressure on the back and you will certainly feel a bit of pain. Mostly the injury is related to muscle or ligament strain. 

If you take proper rest and do some light exercise for the backside, it will be enough to remove the pain. But sometimes the injury can be severe like fractures. If it's severe and you feel pain in bending you low back part after a long time, then you must consult a physician.

7. Knee pain 

Repetitive and uncontrolled landing on the court is the main reason behind knee pains. There will be frequent landings in volleyball and the players will lose the control now or then, so it’s quite obvious to feel a sort of pain in front of your knee.

If the knee rotates just after landing, it can also cause you injuries. You can wear knee pads to reduce the chances of receiving knee pains. Stretch your legs and try to land softly and also with good alignment. All this will be helpful in reducing the chances of this injury.

Volleyball injuries Solution

Well the best solution is prevention. You can do certain things to lessen the chances of being injured during the match.

  1. Take regular physical exercises to keep your body fit. Because a physically fit player has less chances of getting injured.
  2. Before the game starts, warm up yourself and stretch your body parts.
  3. Keep your muscles motile and increase the flexibility by stretching frequently.
  4. Use knee pads to protect your knees from getting injured.
  5. Your shoes must have the capability to support your ankle and feet, which will lessen the chances of ankle sprains.
  6. You must be aware of what kind of injury can occur during the game, and that's why to carry proper first aiding for not letting the injury gets severe.
